Giant Rat (Diseased)

Rat, Giant (Diseased)

Small beast, unaligned

Challenge Rating
25 XP

The giant rat, in its diseased form, is a more dangerous and menacing version of its already formidable counterpart. Afflicted by a virulent sickness, its fur becomes matted and discolored, and its red, bloodshot eyes radiate with a malevolent glimmer.

The diseased giant rat is not only a formidable opponent in combat but also poses an additional threat due to its infectious bite. Its sharp, yellowed teeth carry a potent disease that can quickly spread to those unfortunate enough to be wounded by it. The disease can cause fever, weakness, and severe sickness, making it a formidable challenge for adventurers to overcome.

These diseased creatures are often found in decaying environments, such as sewers, swamps, or areas contaminated by dark magic. They thrive in the filth and decay, becoming carriers of various pathogens and toxins. Their diseased nature grants them an increased resilience to ailments, making them even more difficult to defeat.

While their physical attributes and combat prowess remain similar to their healthy counterparts, the diseased giant rats exhibit more aggressive behavior and heightened hostility. They are known to attack in larger groups, seeking to overwhelm their prey through sheer numbers and infectious bites.

Encounters with diseased giant rats require extra caution and proper protective measures. Adequate hygiene, immunizations, or magical protections may be necessary to mitigate the risk of infection. Experienced adventurers may also need to carry antidotes or employ curative spells to counteract the effects of the rat’s diseased bite.

Despite their repugnant nature, diseased giant rats are sometimes sought after by unscrupulous individuals for their disease-carrying capabilities. Alchemists, plague doctors, or those practicing dark arts may attempt to capture and utilize these creatures to harvest their diseased essence for experimental purposes or as a means of spreading contagion.

Actions

  • Bite: Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 (1d4 + 2) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or contract a disease. Until the disease is cured, the target can’t regain hit points except by magical means, and the target’s hit point maximum decreases by 3 (1d6) every 24 hours. If the target’s hit point maximum drops to 0 as a result of this disease, the target dies.
